Ned Colletti needs to go. Not because he makes bad trades, he’s actually been pretty good at that, but because his ability to evaluate free agent players is horrible.
Now, I don’t know how much this has to do with Frank McCheap, I mean McCourt but it just seems Colletti is just bad at this and the funny thing is, the Giants used to be horrible at this as well so it shows me that this is something that’s a part of who he is and may not get better in time.
Let’s take a look at the players that were signed this year.
Eugenio Velez - Signed to a minor league contract, called up July 4th and has gone an amazing 0-30.
Juan Uribe - This was supposed to be the Dodgers “big splash”
signing and I thought he’d help the team even if he only hit his 162 game average of .250 with 19 HR’s. I wish he’d hit half that! As of now he’s hitting .204 with only 4 HR’s and has had several stints on the DL, he’s been a bust this season.
Marcus Thames - Supposed to provide the Dodgers with a right handed hitter to platoon with _ except he was designated for assignment. The good thing is that he prompted the Dodgers to trade for Juan Rivera who’s been a “hit.”
Vicente Padilla - Another injury riddled player, he’s been far from what we saw last year.
Dioner Navarro - Recently designated for assignment because he wasn’t doing the work manager Don Mattingly felt he should do.
Aaron Miles - A bright spot this year, has played a lot of 2B and 3B this season and has hit everywhere from 2nd to 8th. One player I hope they bring back next year.
Mike MacDougal - A minor league invitee like Miles who has shown he can still play.
Ted Lilly - Huge disappointment in the 1st half and excellent in the 2nd. I love Lilly but he’s so streaky he’s going to end up making me look like Homer Simpson by the end of his contract.
Hiroki Kuroda - Part of the reason Trayvon Robinson was traded. Has performed well as usual, consistent as usual. Not really a free agent signing like Ted Lilly he’s a resigning.
Gabe Kapler - Hasn’t seen the majors this season but has played well for AAA.
Tony Gwynn- Hasn’t been great but has been better for the Dodgers than he was for the Padres last year and for a while he was looking like his father and has played great defense.
Matt Guerrier - Disappointment of a free agent signing, was supposed to compete with Kuo for the set-up role but has lost quite a few games.
Jay Gibbons - Had eye issues in spring training and didn’t recover, have no idea where he is now, may have retired.
Jon Garland - Pitched a few games then was out for the year. Just another long list of injuries this season.
Dana Eveland - Pitched in the minors all year and in his first start in the majors this season pitched well, don’t know how long that’ll last but he did well when it was needed.
Juan Castro - Called up, sucked, sent down, retired. Nuff said.
- Another injury but there was only one. Has provided some sparks and played ok behind the backstop.
So it seems he’s good at taking players like MacDougal and Miles who other teams throw away and they contribute but those like Gibbons, Guerrier, Thames, Garland that were supposed to contribute on a regular basis just didn’t cut it.
I’d really like to see the Dodgers do away with but it won’t happen, he’s cheap and is friends with McCourt, which should disqualify him in the first place! Hopefully if we get a new owner soon, his first order of business will be to kick Colletti out!
