Gagne Surgery Update
Posted: Wed Apr 5, 2006 1:16 PM

Los Angeles- Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Dodgers will have surgery today to remove a nerve from his pitching elbow, his second surgery in less than a year leaving his status for this season in doubt.

The Los Angeles Dodgers would not set a timetable for Eric Gagne's return, his loss is a severe blow to the Los Angeles Dodgers pennant hopes, as he was one of the most dominant closers of recent time, saving 152 games between 2002-2004 and winning the National League Cy Young award in 2003.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Frank Jobe and Dr. Ralph Gambardella of the team's medical staff at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. It's the same nerve that was moved during an operation last June.

Los Angeles Dodgers trainer Stan Johnston didnt rule out a return to action before the season is over for Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but is guarded in his optimism saying "I wouldnt say that, Johnston replied when asked if Gagne might miss the entire season. "After the surgeons get finished there will be a timetable.

All agree that Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Dodgers will make a full recovery, "I'm very disappointed because i thought this would be behind us, Gagne said in a statement issued through the team."It was a decision where i wanted to be 100 percent and be myself and enjoy it because i cant pitch with that kind of pain" The Los Angeles Dodgers acquisition of proven closer Danys Baez from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays during the offseason now proves to be an intelligent move, Danys Baez of the Los Angeles Dodgers saved 41 games last season and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night.

Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager Ned Coletti said Baez was obtained to shore up the bullpen and as a security blanket in case Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Dodgers remained unable to pitch, Gagne admitted that he had been pitching in pain all spring long, although he didnt appear to have any discomfort or problems, but his velocity was down from years past,Los Angeles

Dodgers manager Grady Little also stated that Eric Gagne wasnt close to what we had all seen in the past, now the Los Angeles Dodgers have three players expected to play prominent roles in their quest for the National League West title on the disabled list as Eric Gagne joins Nomar Garciaparra and Kenny Lofton, the Los Angeles Dodgers start a three-game series today against the Philadelphia Phillies, manager Grady Little said Danys Baez will take over the closer's role but was certain who would be the set up men for the Los Angeles Dodgers who are 1-2 on the young season.
