LA Dodges even out losses
Posted: May 11, 2006

Los Angeles- Brett Tomko of the Los Angeles Dodgers allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and the offense has come alive for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they pounded out 13 hits to defeat the Houston Astros 9-6 Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, it was the fifth consecutive win for the Los Angeles Dodgers who improved their record to 17-17 on the season.

Manager Grady Little of the Los Angeles Dodgers was pleased with the performance but still feels there are some things his club needs to work on, "We feel pretty good about winning five in a row, but we know that the best part of our season is still to come," Little said after the Los Angeles Dodgers handed the defending NL champion Houston Astros their sixth straight loss. "We like the way we're swinging the bats right now, but we've got a few things to iron out in the bullpen.

"The Los Angeles Dodgers jumped to a 9-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way as Jeff Kent of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Rafael Furcal of the Los Angeles Dodgers hit three-run homers and Nomar Garciaparra of the Los Angeles Dodgers added a solo shot, the Los Angeles Dodgers have scored 31 runs in their last three games and are beginning to produce offensively the way many expected.

Tim Hamulack of the Los Angeles Dodgers relieved Brett Tomko of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the seventh and gave up three runs, two on a double by pinch-hitter Eric Bruntlett of the Houston Astros and the other on a broken-bat infield hit by Willy Taveras of the Houston Astros.

Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros hit his 12th homer in the ninth, a three-run shot off Franquelis Osoriaof the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Danys Baezof the Los Angeles Dodgers came on and struck out Morgan Ensberg and Preston Wilson of the Houston Astros to end it, but it was obvious that the relieversof the Los Angeles Dodgers are still struggling and if not for the huge lead and stellar effort by Tomko the outcome could have and probably would have been different, "It's not something we think about," Brett Tomko of the Los Angeles Dodgers said of the bullpen's recent woes.

"Our job is to go out there and go as long as we can and then give it up to them, "Everybody slumps. Hitters slump, Starters slump, bullpens have days where they don't go out and do it, but it's not something we sit around worrying about. Besides, there's going to be plenty of games where we give it up and they're going to get us out of some jams.

That stuff all evens out." Taylor Buchholz (2-2) of the Houston Astros allowed eight runs and 12 hits over 4 1-3 innings in his fifth major league start, after giving up no more than two earned runs in any of the previous four. The right-hander came in with a 2.16 ERA and had limited opposing hitters to a major league-low .154 batting average but was hammered by the hot bats of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros manager Phil Garner was impressed by the offensive fireworks of the Los Angeles Dodgers but was also disappointed in his teams' poor showing,

We're going to have to stop them from scoring here pretty soon, and we've got to keep them in the ballpark once in a while,"Garner said.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will face the Houston Astros in the final game of the series as Wandy Rodriguez of the Houston Astros pitches against Derek Lowe of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday May 11th at Dodger Stadium.
