Dodgers and Padres Face off

This September, the face off between Gregg Maddux and David Wells started. During last Friday night’s game, Maddux struggled in his previous two outings and later took the ball. He threw 6 out of 3 no-hit innings and it opened a crucial series for the Dodgers with a 3 out of 1 victory over the Padres in front of 52,911 spectators at Dodger Stadium.

"Everybody would have liked to see him take a one-hitter into the ninth," Little said, "but we have to look at the big picture. He gave us an outstanding performance. We couldn't ask for anything more."

Maddux threw 68 pitches and struck out one.

During his Dodgers debut last Aug. 3 at Cincinnati, he had six no-hit innings before his outing was ended by a rain delay. As the Dodgers and Padres opened a four-game series, Maddux faced a big start after coming off the consecutive losses.

"You put on yourself," Maddux said. "I looked at the standings when I got up and we were either going to be in first place or second place when the night was over. That puts pressure on you."

The Dodgers lost 6 out of 10 games on the recent road trip and had a 3-11 record against the Padres this season, including 0-5 at Dodger Stadium.

Maddux shut down the Padres with an anxious start. Dave Roberts was thrown out by Russell Martin while attempting to steal second after creating 5 pitches during the start of the game.
It was also hard to know what to expect from Maddux against the Padres. Through three innings, he nearly matched Maddux pitch for pitch, as he allowed only a second-inning single to Julio Lugo, but the Dodgers managed a huge two-out rally in the fourth.
