The Los Angeles Dodgers hope to continue their solid pitching this afternoon when they conclude their four-game series with the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium.
The clubs split the first two games of this set before the Los Angeles Dodgers emerged with a 5-3 win yesterday. LA starter Brett Tomko pitched 6 2/3 innings -- carrying a no-hitter into the sixth frame -- to earn his first victory of the season.
Tomko (1-3) finished with five hits and three runs allowed with six strikeouts and two walks for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won five of eight. Tomko also picked up his first RBI of the season. Jonathan Broxton pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief and Takashi Saito worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.
Olmedo Saenz hit his second home run of the season for LA, while Russell Martin went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. The Los Angeles Dodgers next return home for six games, with the first three against Cincinnati.
Los Angeles has won seven of its last nine over Florida.
Derek Lowe aims for back-to-back wins tonight for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right- hander pitched very well last time out, allowing only one unearned run and three hits over seven innings with a season-high eight strikeouts in a win over Atlanta.
Lowe, who is 3-3 with a 3.89 earned run average this season, has pitched against Florida 11 times in his career, six of those starts, and is 5-2 with three saves and a 4.29 ERA.
Sergio Mitre counters and makes his second start since returning from the disabled list Saturday. Mitre, who had been sidelined due to a blister on his right middle finger, received a no-decision last week against the Padres, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on four hits over six frames.
The righty has made two relief appearances against Los Angeles spanning two innings, and has scattered a pair of hits without allowing a run.
Mike Jacobs hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the seventh for the Marlins, who have lost four of five. Hanley Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Dontrelle Willis (5-2) pitched seven innings of six-hit, four-run ball in the loss. The southpaw, though, walked five and struck out just one batter.
The Marlins, who are 9-11 at home this season, next go on the road for 10 games, beginning with a three-game contest in Washington.
