Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Bronson Arroyo combined with three other pitchers in an eight-hit shutout as the Cincinnati Reds downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.
Arroyo (5-12) went 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits with five strikeouts for the Reds, who have won three straight after a five-game losing streak.
Edwin Encarnacion went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs while Brandon Phillips hit a solo home run and scored twice in the win for Cincinnati, which snapped a nine-game skid against Los Angeles.
Juan Pierre went 3-for-4 while Mark Hendrickson (4-6) was handed the loss as he gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings of work for the fading Los Angeles Dodgers, who have lost five straight and eight of their last nine games.
The Reds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Norris Hopper and Phillips opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After the next two batters recorded outs, Adam Dunn punched a single to right to score Hopper. Encarnacion then followed with a double down the left field line to bring home Phillips and Dunn.
Phillips extended Cincinnati's lead to 4-0 in the third when he led off the frame with a shot over the center field wall, his 21st home run of the season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had their first good opportunity in the sixth when their first two batters reached base, but Arroyo retired the next three hitters to get out of the inning.
Arroyo was pulled with two outs in the seventh with runners at first and third and Mike Stanton took the mound and recorded the final out.
Pierre started the eighth with a single, but Jared Burton took over for Stanton and threw a scoreless eighth before David Weathers retired the Los Angeles Dodgers in order in the ninth.
