Matthew Ryan Kemp was born on September 23, 1984, in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Matt Kemp is a Major League Baseball outfielder.
Kemp attended Midwest City High School in Midwest City, Oklahoma and was a standout in basketball and baseball.
Kemp made his Major League Baseball debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 28, 2006, against the Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C..
Kemp made the jump from the Double-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League, to the Majors, foregoing Triple-A. Kemp was recalled in an effort to provide regular rest for center fielder Kenny Lofton and oft injured right field All-Star J.D. Drew. In his first two games, Kemp went 3 for 7 (.429 batting average) with 2 runs batted in, 3 runs scored, and 1 stolen base.
Kemp was recalled ahead of hot Triple-A prospects Joel Guzmán and Delwyn Young due to Kemp's ability to play all three outfield positions. He was reassigned to AAA Las Vegas in mid-july, but was recalled to the Dodgers when rosters expanded on September 1. He is considered one of the top prospects in baseball, and the best outfield prospect in the Dodger's organization. The Dodgers showed their confidence in Kemp by declining a trade offer by the Red Sox which would have sent Kemp to Boston for left hand pitcher David Wells.
